Pipeline Testing
Especially in natural gas pipelines, hydrostatic pressure testing prevents disasters on a large scale. The great thing about this is that if a pipeline fails, processes to repair the pipeline can prove difficult and time consuming, this testing helps eliminate those issues and have as little down time as possible. These pipelines are tested for strength by pressurizing them to at least 125% of their maximum operating pressure at any point along the length of the pipeline. Standard hydrostatic pressure testing procedures entail filling the test vessel with liquid, bleeding out air and then pressurizing the piece. The testing mediums of air, oil, and water are mainly used, but water is often the go-to solution for its price and ease of use.
In Home Use
To put things into perspective as far as prevention goes, look at it this way. Portable fire extinguishers are highly recommended in every home. Over time, the conditions in which they are housed and the manner of how they are handled have an impact of the structural integrity of the fire extinguisher. That being said, a structurally weakened fire extinguisher can malfunction or even burst when it is needed most. To maintain the quality and safety of this product, hydrostatic testing is being utilized. All critical components of the fire extinguisher should be tested to ensure proper function.
Using this pressure testing process on your pipes for personal or commercial use is a decision that should definitely be considered, not only can it save you money in the long run in the event of a disaster, but you can also rest assured that your pipes are guaranteed to last.
