Metallic and Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Metallic & Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Metallic and semi-metallic gaskets include gaskets of the spiral wound, camprofile, metal jacketed and corrugated semi-metallic types. These gasket types are usually used in very demanding conditions, which require the gasket to withstand high pressures or temperatures, or exposure to chemicals.

Spiral Wound Gaskets

Spiral wound gaskets are used in high temperature and pressure applications, and where high surface stresses can be reached. Normally, a spiral wound gasket consists of a number of parts as follows:

  1. Outer Guide Ring
  2. Strip
  3. Filler
  4. Inner Support Ring

However, there are several variations, such as gaskets with no guide and support rings, gaskets with only the outer guide ring and/or inner support ring, or with both the inner and outer rings. There are several material options to suit a range of applications. The key advantages of spiral wound gaskets are their high resistance to pressure inside the piping, their high mechanical durability and their excellent resilience.

Camprofile Gaskets

Camprofile gaskets consist of a serrated metal core and soft facing materials. The materials are selected in accordance with the target use. Camprofile gaskets are excellent at withstanding both fluctuating conditions and extreme heat and pressure. They provide a seal with low surface stress and can withstand mechanical chafing.

Metal Jacketed Gaskets

Metal jacketed gaskets consist of soft filler and a metal jacket. The materials are selected for the specific service conditions. Metal jacketed gaskets are available in a number of shapes and sizes, both with and without partition ribs. The advantages of this gasket type include resistance to high surface stress and optimal formation with good creep resistance.

Corrugated Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Corrugated metal gaskets without soft facing materials are favored in applications which do not require high compressibility. The gasket’s operation is based on the differences in hardness of different kinds of metals. Corrugated gaskets are also available covered with soft facings for applications where the sealing surfaces are warped or otherwise damaged. However, we do not recommend the use of gaskets to compensate for the misalignment of flanges. The advantages of these gaskets include good mechanical durability, excellent thermal conductivity and resistance to corrosion and heat.
